Department of Physics

Basaveshwar Science College is the second oldest affiliated private college in the annals of Karnatak University .The department of physics of Basaveshwar Science College was established in the year 1945. It served the needs of the students who studied physics either as a major subject at B.Sc.

level or a minor subject. In the year 1998-99, Karnatak University shifted, at U.G. level, to the pattern “Three subjects of equal importance” and consequently the same change was introduced at the U.G. level in the college.The department was trendsetter for other colleges – both constituent and affiliated, by getting a UGC project of nearly Rs.35lakhs for modrnisation of upgrading of Electronics laboratory. In its long history, the department has on its role many rank students and research workers. The firm belief of the dept. in the research activity is reflected in the number of the staff with the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.

The research work done by the staff is reflected, apart from the M.Phil. and Ph.D. work, through research papers published in the International and National Journals.The teachers of our department have not limited to the teaching physics, many of them have extended themselves to the field of social service, literature and popularisation of science in Kannada. The department was trendsetter for other colleges – both constituent and affiliated, by getting a UGC project of nearly Rs.35 lakhs for modernisation of upgrading of Electronics laboratory.

Objectives

Physics is a way of understanding the nature in terms of experimental observations and the relevant theories. The theories are based on the concepts in Physics coupled with mathematical modeling. The laws of Physics though limited in number are able to explain large number of physical, chemical and biological systems. The Physics has the status of fundamental science and is studied as a multidisciplinary subject, the continued process of new discoveries, investigations, formulations, ideas, and inventions in Physics have kept the subject interesting and challenging. The department of Physics at present has UG programme and is working with the following broad objectives.

• To teach fundamentals of Physics

• To develop the experimental skills amongst the students

• To expose and create an atmosphere among the students to imbibe the innovative ideas

• To enhance presentation skills of students by conducting Seminars, Quiz, Group discussions

• Motivate the staff and students to develop research attitude

• To impart basics of research methodology

• They regularly make use ICT facilities like Laptop computer, LCD projector for teaching in the class room

• Internet is accessed in the class room through Wi-Fi facility, content of relevant websites, animations, simulations are directly shown to the students

• Dr.R.H.Fattepur, Prof.S.B.Goudar of Physics department are regularly using e-content in the class room and the same is made available to the interested students.

Seminar and Workshop

1) Smt.Pratibha Kanavi, presented a paper on “synthesis and characterization of titanium oxide embedded with hydropoly acid and their evaluation for Hall voltage” in the international conference on Advances in Material, ceramics and engineering sciences -2020, held at DSCE Bangalore on 17/1/2020 to 18/1/2020.

2) Smt.Pratibha Kanavi, presented a paper on “synthesis,characterization and anti bacterial activities of ZnO Nanoparticles and their application in anti fungal activity” in international conference on Advances in Material Research -2019,held at Ramaiah university Bangalore from 25/7/2019 to 27/7/2019.

3) Smt.Pratibha Kanavi attended International Conference on Functional Materials (ICFM-2018) and presented a paper on “Optical and thermoelectric properties of ZnO NR’s using cost effective synthesis method” at SCSV Mahavidyalaya, Kanchipuram-Tamilnadu on June 25-26, 2018.

4) Smt. Pratibha Kanvi presented a paper on “Spectrum analysis and radio activity concentration calculation of soil using MCA” in one day International conference on “Humanities, science,technology and environment” held at Anjuman arts,science and commerce college and PG studies in English Vijayapur organized by Deccan environmental and research organization vijaypur on 28th Aug 2017.

5) Mr. Anand Teli had been selected for “Summer Research Fellowship programme-2017 in BARC Mumbai” through Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and worked on the project “Application of particle induced gamma ray emission (PIGE) method utilizing 5MeV proton beam from folded tandem accelerator for quantification of boron in refractory materials” for the 2 months on June-July 2017.

6) Ms.Shobha V Karjol She had been selected for “Summer Research Fellowship programme-2017 in IASc Bengaluru” through Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and worked on the project “ Capacitance measurement of electrical double layer capacitor made by carbon nanotubes over mild steel” for the 2 months on June-July 2017

7) Smt.Pratibha Kanavi Submitted and selected a contributory paper with BARC on the topic “Simulations and Track Reconstruction for Muon Tomography using Resistive Plate Chambers” for DAE Symposium in Kolkatta on Dec-2016

Research

Staff members of Physics are involved in research in the areas of Dielectric relaxation studies using, Ultrasonic studies, Active filters etc. Three minor research projects funded by UGC have been completed and two more MRP’s of total outlay (Rs.3.43lakh) are in progress.In the last five years faculty of the department have
